Sacred Sistahs, Inc will host its First Annual S.E.S.H.A.T (Seeking Excellence in Science, Healthcare, Arithmetic, and Technology) Conference on Math and Science for Middle and High School African American Girls.
On Saturday, March 26, 2010 the First Annual Sacred Sistahs, Inc. S.E.S.H.A.T. Conference on Math and Science for African American Girls will be held at the Joseph B. Platt Campus Center at Harvey Mudd College located at 301 Platt Boulevard, Claremont, CA 91711 from 8:00 am – 1:00 pm.
The conference is being co-sponsored by the Harvey Mudd College Mathematics Department and Transcendence Children & Family Services of Pomona.
The inaugural theme is “Envisioning a Word of New Possibilities” and over 100 girls from all over the Inland Empire and Southern California have already registered.
The goal of the conference is to introduce careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math to African American girls in middle school and high school. Research has demonstrated that even though girls perform as well as boys in science and math, there is a marked loss of interest in STEM areas that occurs in middle school and that girls’ attitudes about careers and math and science affect their persistence and involvement in advanced coursework during their high school years.
This suggests a need for strong female role models in STEM fields at the middle school level or earlier.
Dr. Talithia Williams, an Assistant Professor of Mathematics and Statistics at Harvey Mudd College, will deliver the keynote address.
In addition, the conference will feature women who are practicing professionals in the fields of medicine, engineering, aerospace technology (NASA), statistics, mathematics, and film making.
Sacred Sistahs, Inc. is a 501c3 non-profit organization whose mission is to empower, serve, and improve the overall health, well-being, spirit, and vitality of African American and African women and children by nourishing and elevating the mind, body, and spirit.
