Under the direction of Reggie Andrews, who established the group in 1991, the band will perform a medley of time-honored classics from the best of such big band legends as Duke Ellington and Count Basie, among others. The afternoons musical selections will include Ellingtons Take The A Train, Basies One Oclock Jump, Thelonious Monks Straight, No Chaser and Gerald Wilsons Viva Tirado.
The acclaimed Los Angeles Multi-School Jazz Band is an ensemble of talented young musicians from local public and private schools including Alain Locke High School, Washington Preparatory High School, Westchester High School and Warren Lane Elementary School. Sponsored by the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, band members receive intensive musical training, performance opportunities, scholarships and private in-school instruction. Student musicians and former Locke High School alumni ranging in age from 15 to 50 will perform together in the Los Angeles Multi-School Jazz Band this year. The Locke alumni (who graduated in the 70s) recently formed a band and continue to perform together.
The Bradley Senior Center in Watts has been the venue for some of the most enjoyable and gratifying activities on the Playboy Jazz Festival community events calendar virtually since the beginning. With great entertainment provided by some of the best young musicians in Los Angeles and some of their professional alumni colleagues a capacity audience of seniors and community friends takes to the floor to show that theyve still got that swing. This is one dance party we all look forward to each year, said Bill Farley, the Jazz Festivals Vice President, Marketing Events.
An annual event that has become a treasured neighborhood tradition, the concert is the second in Playboys free community event series. The event is presented in conjunction with this years upcoming 26th Annual Playboy Jazz Festival, to be held June 19th and 20th at the newly renovated Hollywood Bowl. The concert is also part of the Watts Labor Community Action Committees (WLCAC) expansion program and musical series.
Free parking for the Friday performance is provided by the Watts Labor Community Action Committee Centers parking lot located at 10950 South Central Avenue. The WLCAC Bradley Senior Center will serve lunch to its participating senior citizens.
