Elsie Poindexter Remembered

San Bernardino

Known for her culinary skills, Elsie Vera Poindexter was active for years after she arrived in San Bernardino some 38 years ago. She passed away at St. Bernardine’s Hospital last Thursday, May 8, 2003. She was 77 years old.

Active on election campaigns and with community organizations, Poindexter was very active in the community in the late 60’s and early 70’s, and was instrumental in the desegregation of the San Bernradino School District. She retired from Verdamont Boy’s Ranch after 18 years of service. Poindexter was an active member of the Top’s Club and was well known for her cooking.

Poindexter is survived by her husband of 50 years, Morris. They have two daughters, Sheila Poindexter of Los Angeles, California and Sharon Poindexter of Atlanta, Georgia; one son, Michael Poindexter of Garland, Texas and two grandchildren, Monique and Mykiala Poindexter of Moss Point, Mississippi.

Other family members include a step-daughter, Charlene Loyds of Detroit, Michigan and her two daughters and granddaughters. In addition, Poindexter leaves behind three step-sisters and a host of nieces and nephews.
