An array of exciting programming is offered from April through June at the newly re-opened and renovated California African American Museum for the public to enjoy.
Current exhibitions at the museum include: Grafton Tyler Brown: Visualizing California and the Pacific Northwest; Finding Family Stories; A Tribute to John T. Riddle, Jr.; Urban Aesthetics: California Artists 2003; and The African American Journey West. Following is a list of programs and dates:
Inquiries and Discoveries: Pillars of the Community
Pillars of the Community is the second part of the series, Inquiries and Discoveries.
Participants explore the carved Nigerian veranda post and its kinship to contemporary African American public work with lecturer Wanda Clarke. They will also be inspired by the life and work of African American architect Paul Revere Williams and learn about the contributions of other African Americans to architectural history in a lecture by Rochelle Dynes Milles. Participants will ride the rails with Gayle Gale on a Metro Rail Public Art tour and converse with local artists June Edmonds, Elliot Pinkney and John Outterbridge during studio visits. Finally, Los Angeles artist Dominique Moody will guide participants in the collaborative creation of a memorable mosaic pillar.
Program is limited to 25 participants. All programs will begin at 11:00 am. Lectures will last 45-60 minutes, and do not require registration. Workshops are 2 hours. Free. To register, call 213-744-2133

Inquiries and Discoveries: 1st Art workshop with Dominique Moody (4)
Inspired by the art of the Nigerian veranda post and led by artist Dominique Moody, participants will collaborate in the creation of a sculptural post that reflect their individuality as well as their role in the community. (This program requires previous registration).

Participants will visit the workshops of three artists involved in public art. Participants will have the opportunity to see more of the artists work as well as to ask questions and suggestions for their own piece. Previous registration required.

A Panel Discussion for Urban Aesthetics
Several artists from the Urban Aesthetics exhibition will discuss their work and the experiences and messages behind it.
Saturday High
The California African American Museum in partnership with the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena offers a unique opportunity for students in the central and southern Los Angeles areas to learn new visual skills and gain exposure to career opportunities in several design fields. These hands-on studio courses such as graphic design and environmental and interior design are taught by practicing design professionals and are intended for students, grades 9-12, who might have difficulty attending classes at the Pasadena campus.
Together, Art Center and the California African American Museum invite high school students in the communities close to downtown Los Angeles to study and discover with us this summer. A generous number of scholarships that cover the full cost of tuition for one course are available and we encourage interested students to apply.

Juneteenth Commemoration
To commemorate June 19th, 1868, the day African Americans of Galveston, Texas, learned about the Emancipation Proclamation, the Museum invites you to attend a very special performance. DeBorah Sharpe Taylor will play the role of Harriet Tubman, the Black Moses who led Africa’s children to freedom in a dynamic, costumed dramatization, Letters to Harriet Tubman. In addition, Museum educators will conduct free tours exploring key pieces of the permanent collection.
