EXPLORE THE LATEST IN GREEN TECHNOLOGY AT CSUSB SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Cal State San Bernardino’s College of Education and College of Extended Learning will jointly offer a new course this summer, “Exploration into Green Technology.”
The introductory course takes a look at some of the most popular green technology available today. “Exploration into Green Technology” will meet for five Wednesday evenings from June 29-July 27 from 6-9:50 p.m. at Cal State San Bernardino.
The course provides an overview of how solar (photovoltaic) power, wind turbine generation, and fuel cell technology work to produce energy. Students will learn about worldwide demand for diminishing fossil fuels, as well as the many economic and ecological advantages of using alternative, renewable energy sources. Some basics about electrical power will be covered, such as energy production, storage, retrieval, measurement and distribution.
Class topics will include how power companies calculate and charge for energy use, the break-even and profit points in the lifespan of renewable energy systems, and available financial incentives to home and business owners for going green.
Each of the five weekly class sessions will combine instruction, demonstrations, and hands-on lab time. The university teaching lab is equipped with the same Marcraft green technology training panels that industry professionals use when preparing for certification. Students will be able to connect, measure voltage and electrical current, and calculate the power generated by a typical solar photovoltaic panel. In addition, they’ll learn how to measure and calculate the energy generated by a turbine at various wind speeds, and witness the operation of a typical fuel cell and the many ways that the generated energy can be harnessed for use.
“Exploration into Green Technology” begins on Wednesday, June 29, 6-9:50 p.m. in the College of Education’s Green Technology Lab at CSUSB. The course fee of $280 includes two units of extension credit. Register by Monday, June 20, to ensure a place in class. For more information, call (909) 537-5981.
In addition to the new “Exploration into Green Technology” course, the university’s College of Extended Learning also offers three green certificate programs in partnership with San Diego State University’s College of Extended Studies.
Each certificate consists of five topic-specific courses: Green Building Construction, Green Energy Management, and Residential and Commercial Sustainable Practices. Courses may be taken individually with no obligation to complete the certificate.
