[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]When it was discovered that there were going to be armed members of the New Black Panther Party in Cleveland during the Republican National Convention last week there were calls to stop this action, some went as far as to suggest that the governor should temporarily suspend the “open carry” laws of that state…anything to prevent Negroes from being armed.

This fear of an armed Negro can easily be traced back to slavery during and after which there were laws preventing the enslaved and formerly enslaved Africans from carrying weapons or even sticks, laws preventing them from gathering in groups of 3 or more without a white witness, even laws against looking a white man directly in the eyes. Of course learning to read or write was also punishable by death…a topic for another time, right now the topic is the fear of NWG – N’s With Guns.

In recent weeks, in light of the most recent shootings, the gun control debate has once again taken center stage with those in favor of more strict gun control attempting to make their case by citing the success of countries that have strong gun control laws such as Australia, England and Canada as examples of places where fewer guns have resulted in few deaths by guns – the difference between hundreds or even dozens of deaths per capita in those countries vs. thousands of deaths in the US. Of course these type of fact-based arguments are often rebutted by pro-gun advocates with their own “facts” such as “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” or “the only thing that can stop a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”

But something occurred to me when I heard about the uproar about a group of armed Black folks walking around with guns…the only thing that might put more fear in the hearts of those who want to “make America safe again” and the NRA is the threat of NWG’s. I’m pretty sure that when Charleton Heston declared “Only from my dead cold hands,” the hands he had in mind weren’t those of Black Panthers.

(I thought about including another famous Heston quote here: “get your hands off me you dirty ape” but that might be seen as playing the race card, and since this has nothing to do with race, I won’t.)

In a previous commentary I suggested that we should stop praying for the latest victims of senseless crimes. Now my suggestion is that maybe more Black people should exercise their 2nd Amendment right.

Second Amendment Text: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed).

I see this as a win-win situation. More good guys, who just happen to be Black, will have guns in order to stop the bad guys with guns; or the proliferation of NWG’s will ultimately scare the country into passing more sensible gun laws.

Just a thought.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
