Breanna Reeves is a health reporter/ assistant editor for Black Voice News/IE Voice where she uses data-driven reporting to cover issues that affect the lives of Black Californians. Breanna joined Black Voice News as a Report for America Corps member in 2021. In 2022, Breanna was selected as a fellow for USC’s Center for Health Journalism California Fellowship. In 2024, Breanna participated as an editor for USC’s Center for Health Journalism Ethnic Media Health Reporting Collaborative. She has also won several awards for her health reporting.

The 2026-27 proposed budget submitted a reduction of $86 million in General Funds to conform the IHSS Residual Program with the timing of Medi-Cal coverage, beginning in 2026-27. The budget also proposed a reduction of $3.5 million in General Funds to eliminate the IHSS Backup Provider System, beginning in 2026-27, and a reduction of $233.6 million in General Funds to remove the state’s share of cost for IHSS hours per case growth, beginning in 2027‑28.

Governor Gavin Newsom’s proposed 2026-27 budget includes a $2.9 billion budget shortfall, with increased revenue from AI and a strong stock market, but no new state funds for affordable housing and reductions to the IHSS program.

President Donald Trump has unleashed ICE agents, border patrol officers and National Guard troops in cities across the nation. These officers are grabbing people off the streets and/or kicking down doors to homes and also arresting people outside courtrooms before secreting them away to locations within and outside the country without Due Process. Citizens in these communities are not only being harassed, some are being harmed physically and in some instances, killed by these officers who V.P. JD Vance says have “absolute immunity”

In December 2025, President Trump directed the Secretary of Health and Human Services and the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to review the U.S. child vaccine schedule. As a result, of the 18 vaccinations listed on the CDC’s Child and Adolescent Immunization Schedule, just 11 vaccines are now recommended.

Under AB 1264, recently signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom, CA became the first state in the nation to ban ultra-processed foods in schools. Ultra-processed foods are defined in the state as any food or beverage that contains thickeners and flavor enhancers, high amounts of saturated fat, sodium, or added sugar, or a nonnutritive sweetener.
