COVID-19 remains a serious, potentially deadly health risk. In 2024, it was listed as the primary cause of death on roughly 31,400 death certificates in the U.S. and yet, vaccine rates continue to wane. Black Americans, Hispanics and those under 30 have lower vaccination rates, exposing them to serious complications such as long COVID.

Conflicting Advice on Covid Shots Likely To Ding Already Low Vaccine Rates, Experts Warn

Only 23% of American adults received a COVID-19 shot during the 2024-25 virus season, which is well below the 47% of American adults who got a flu shot, and health care experts warn that vaccination rates could fall further due to vaccine hesitancy and misinformation.

In July, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration eliminated the “Press 3” option on the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Option 3 was the dedicated line answered by staff specifically trained to handle LGBTQ+ youth facing mental health issues.
