Report for America Corps member and Black Voice News Climate and Environmental Justice reporter, Prince James Story was raised in Atlanta, Georgia. He is an intersectional journalist with experience covering news and sports across numerous mediums. Story aims to inform the public of social inequities and discriminatory practices while amplifying the voices of those in the communities harmed. Story earned his master’s degree in Sports Journalism from Arizona State University-Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication. He earned a B.A. in Mass Communication and a B.A. in African American studies from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. The FBI’s recently released 2022 nationwide crime report showed 14,631 law enforcement agencies submitted incident reports. There were 11,634 criminal incidents and 13,337 related offenses reported as being motivated by racial, ethnic, ancestral, religious, sexual orientation, disability, or gender bias.

Hate Crimes Increase Nationwide, Racial Bias Remains Prevalent

The FBI released its 2022 nationwide crime report, showing a decrease in violent crime, but an increase in property crime, while hate crimes increased by 794 incidents in California.

60 years ago, on September 15, 1963, during the peak of the Civil Rights Movement, members of the Ku Klux Klan bombed the 16 Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL. Killing four little girls: Addie Mae Collins, Carol Denise McNair, Carole Robertson, and Cynthia Wesley.

“Any increase in crime is significant, must be taken seriously, and demands that we employ serious responses,” said Tinisch Hollins, executive director of Californians for Safety and Justice, in a statement to Black Voice News. “This can’t be about politics, but rather ensuring we pursue the most effective strategies for preventing violence and harm and keeping our communities safe.”
