Care in the IE The Growing Need

Will You Care for Me?

By Breanna Reeves

By 2030, one in every three Californians will be over the age of 50.

Here in Riverside and San Bernardino Counties, the number of people in the community over the age of 60 years is expected to increase by nearly 200% between the years 2010 to 2060.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a demand for caregivers is growing along with the nation’s aging population. For example, the number of caregivers increased from 43.5 million in 2015 to about 53 million in 2020 or about one in five Americans.

As the population ages, demands for caregivers and supportive services are expected to increase exponentially and the number of persons with mobility, sensory, intellectual/developmental, and/or mental health disabilities will also increase. However,  the home care industry’s ability to keep pace with the demand is questionable and so are the costs of these services.

In this series we will explore a myriad of topics related to caregiving, including how to navigate the system for support, in addition to the costs of care for those seeking outside assistance as well as resources available to support in-home care.

Caring for Aging Adults

Camilla Bradford, 64, has been the caregiver for her brother Reginald Arnwine, 65, for over 10 years, and is concerned about how his care will continue as she ages, while sisters Delnita Brown and Le’Era Boyd are also caregivers for their younger sister Le’Era Boyd, who has been afflicted with a neurological condition since birth.
