Rev. Dr. Queen Shamala Ifawuyi Bessie Davis Smith celebrated her 81st birthday with a solo exhibition and book signing of her art and books at the Art by Wash Community Center in Compton, CA.

Celebration of Black Literature Honors Black Panther Party Reading List and Fights Book Bans

“Genesis: The Balm,” a Southern California-based multi-genre vocal group performs at the public release of the Black Eldering Bill of Rights at the Housing Authority in Compton, California on May 17, 2025. Los Angeles County officially designated the third Saturday in May as Black Elders Appreciation Day, which will be celebrated as part of the Sankofa Elders Project. The project, launched by Sistahs Aging with Grace & Elegance, aims to find ways to support and maintain the dignity, care, well-being, and belonging of Black elders. The Black Eldering Bill of Rights is a set of principles that will act as a “guiding framework” to answering the group’s central question and creating solutions.

University of California, Riverside's African Student Program Center (ASP) is one of the longest standing Black Resource Centers in California. Under the stewardship of Director Jamal Myrick, Ed.D, the organization was recently awarded the 2024 Center of the Year by the Association of Black Culture Centers (ABCC).
