[vc_row full_width=”” parallax=”” parallax_image=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text]It’s the time of year again to take an honest look at yourself in the mirror and decide if you should be on the naughty list or if you played nice all year — yeah, especially to your annoying co-worker who’s always using your half-and-half without asking. If you spent the year guided by your inner Lucious Lyon, expect a heaping lump of coal in your Christmas stocking, not the keys to a Tesla.

That said, when it comes to grooming, getting coal in your stocking might not be a bad thing.

It turns out coal, specifically activated charcoal, can help improve the condition of your skin. This charcoal, which can be made form peat, coal, coconut shell, petroleum or bamboo, has been used for generations to stop oral poisonings in emergency situations. Basically, activated charcoal absorbs potentially deadly toxins before they get a chance to be absorbed by the body.

“Activated charcoal is great for the skin because it is characteristically built to absorb toxins, impurities and micro-particles naturally,” said makeup artist Shirley Pinkson, co-founder of beauty and skin-care line W3LL People in Austin, Texas. “Charcoal’s benefits can be beneficial all year long, but it can be especially effective during the warmer seasons when our skin is characteristically oilier. It keeps pores clean, purifies and detoxes the complexion. Regular use of activated charcoal products can reduce acne, blackheads and breakouts overall.”

For centuries, bamboo charcoal has been used in Asian countries for drying tea, purifying drink water (actually, you’ve probably already come in contact with charcoal before: all of those little black flecks at the bottom of your Brita pitcher are — you guessed it — activated charcoal), and brushing teeth. It’s also believed ancient Egyptians used charcoal as a poultice on wounds, and in more recent centuries, it was studied by scientists who wondered about charcoal’s ability to protect people from toxins.

Fast forward to now, websites and magazines reporting on the latest wellness trends have claim activated charcoal has detox benefits and can be used to reduce intestinal gas, lower cholesterol and lessen the chances for hangovers among other health problems. While science hasn’t confirmed those claims, activated charcoal has quickly become an ingredient in skin care products in more recent years.

In addition to products such as soaps, body washes and cleansing masks, activated charcoal, which has antibacterial properties, is being used in detox and wellness juices. While you should talk to a doctor before ingesting activated charcoal, you certainly can use it as part of your skin health routine and perhaps see benefits such as deep clean pores and a lessening of acne outbreaks. Here are nine wellness and skin care products to consider that contain activated charcoal as an ingredient.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row full_width=”” parallax=”” parallax_image=””][vc_column width=”1/1″][vc_column_text css_animation=””]
